The iPad 5 and the next iPad mini 2 will reportedly ship in Q4 of this year, according to a research note from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Kuo has an excellent track record with predicting Apple’s releases, having accurately predicted the release of several of Apple’s latest desktops and laptops as well as iOS devices.
As for specs, Kuo believe that the next iPad will have an iPad mini-like form factor, with a thinner body and smaller bezel around the edges. But it’s the iPad mini that is likely to see the greatest changes, adding a Retina display — something many users are clamoring for. Kou believes both the iPad 5 and Retina iPad mini will run Apple's next-generation A7X processor.
It’s widely believe that Apple’s September 10th even will solely spotlight new iPhones, so Kuo’s Q4 iPad refresh makes sense. Most likely the refresh will occur in early October so Apple can ramp up production in time for the holidays.
Looking into next year, Kou believes Apple will introduce a budget version of the iPad mini, keeping a unit with a non-Retina display and an older A6 processor to keep costs down to appeal to those that want a lower cost tablet.
