10 essential Finder tricks every Mac user should know - Cult of Mac

In Mac OS X, you'll spend much of your time in the Finder, the part of your operating system that manages files and such. While you might think you know all there is to know about it, the Finder is a complex and wonderful app — with its own special tricks to master.

Here are 10 essential Finder tips that will help you get the most out of your time working or playing on your Mac.

Make Quick Look even cooler

quicklook index

Surely you've used the Finder's Quick Look to see a document or image up close on the fly without having to open the associated app. (You do this by simply hitting the space bar when you have a file or files highlighted in the Finder.)

Even cooler? Getting a full-screen slideshow, complete with available index sheet, by hitting Option-space bar with several files selected. You'll be able to scroll through them all with the arrow keys, either onscreen or on your keyboard, and if you click the little Index button, you'll see all your selected files on one screen. Click on the one you want to see full-size, or hit Esc to get back to the Finder.

Show your Home Directory in the Sidebar

home folder

home folder

Your Home folder contains all your stuff, including documents, photos and music. It makes sense to show it in the Finder's Sidebar, which is itself a collection of all the things you use often.

To make the Home folder show up, simply choose Preferences from the Finder menu (or hit Command-comma when you're in the Finder). Then click the little checkbox to the left of your Home folder's name. Then open a Finder window and drag and drop your Home folder wherever you'd like it. I like to keep it near the top of my sidebar items.

Show the Status and Path bars

path status bars

path status bars

These two bars reside at the bottom of any Finder window, giving you important info about your Mac. The Status bar will show you how many items you have in a specific folder as well as how much free storage you have left on your hard disk, while the Path bar will show you the folder path of any highlighted file or folder in the Finder.

Both are useful, and both can be enabled in the View menu. Simply select Show Path Bar or Show Status bar from the View menu in the Finder, or hit Command-/ or Option-Command-P to show and hide them, respectively.

Master the menubar status icons

menubar

If your menubar is loaded with a ton of status icons, you can reorder them and even make them disappear.

To rearrange them, simply hold down the Command button on your keyboard, then drag and drop the icons into the order that most pleases you. This applies to the Apple-provided ones, mostly, as third-party apps don't necessarily allow this trick.

If you want to get rid of the icons, simply Command-click and drag one of the menubar icons toward the middle of the screen. When you let go, the menubar icon will disappear in a cute little puff of simulated smoke, just like when you drag an icon off the Dock. Nice, huh?

If you want them back, simply find the relevant preference pane in System Preferences and click "Show in Menubar."

Theme your screen your own way

contrast

contrast

OS X's look has gotten flatter and less skeuomorphic these days, but if you have a need for an even sharper, more contrasty look, you're in luck. Simply launch System Preferences, click on Accessibility, and then click on Display in the left pane.

Click the checkbox next to Increase contrast to get a more OS 9-like look, complete with darker colors and lighter backgrounds. If you want to kick up the contrast another notch, head to the General section of System Preferences and check off the "Use dark menu bar and Dock" option, just under the Appearance drop-down menu.

Make smarter folders

smart folder

Smart Folders can be super-useful, as they collect files or apps into one folder according to specific criteria set up by you. To make one, simply choose New Smart Folder from the File menu in the Finder. You can also hit Command-Option-N on your keyboard, then type in a topic, phrase or other parameter into the search field.

Pro tip: just like when you're searching in a regular window in the Finder, you can limit the search to only the names of files by choosing "Name matches" in the menu that appears, and clicking on Name, then Filename.

Rename more than one file at once

batch rename

batch rename

You know when you have 47 different files, all named Screenshot? Well, it's super-easy to rename them all to something better, like Cat Pictures, right in the Finder.

All you need to do is select all the files you want to rename, then right-click (or Control-Click) on any of them. Next, click on the contextual menu item "Rename X Items," where X is the number of files you've selected. Then you can do a simple replace text rename, add text to the end of the current file name, or append a number, counter or date at the end using the pop-up menu provided. It's pretty robust — give it a try.

Relaunch the Finder

relaunch

relaunch

There comes a time when even the hardiest app on your Mac, the Finder, will freeze or crash. You can always reboot at times like this, or shut down with a long press and hold to your power button, but try to relaunch the Finder first.

It's just like Force Quitting any other app — simply hit the Option-Command-Esc key combination to bring up the Force Quit dialog box. You may need to Command-Tab your way to a different, non-crashed app first to see it. Once you see the dialog, highlight the Finder in the list and click Relaunch. This can save you some valuable time as an alternative to rebooting your whole Mac.

Customize Finder window toolbars

customize toolbar

customize toolbar

There's a wealth of helpful widgets and buttons at the top of any Finder window, and for the most part, the default set will do you just fine.

If, however, you want to add or delete anything up there, all you have to do is right-click (or Control-Click) on an empty space in the toolbar itself and choose Customize Toolbar from the contextual menu that pops up. Then drag and drop to your heart's content, or — to reset it — drag the default set up from the bottom of the panel.

Pro tip: Choose Icon only, Text only or Icon and Text for a more- or less-informative look to the set of icons in the toolbar.

Set your default folder

default

default

When you open a Finder window, it defaults to a specific folder (usually Home). If you want a different folder to appear when you open a new Finder window, click on the Finder menu, then Preferences (or hit Command-Comma when in the Finder). You'll be able to choose any folder from the drop-down menu "New Finder windows show" item.

When you click there, you'll get some suggestions, like your hard disk, your Home folder and All Files. Or you can choose Other and navigate to whatever folder you want. Like a boss.

EXCLUSIVE: Channel 2 obtains video of security guard shooting at car outside ... - WSB Atlanta

Channel 2 Action News obtained exclusive surveillance camera video of a security guard shooting at a passing SUV outside a popular Midtown Atlanta restaurant. Atlanta Police later arrested the guard and charged him with aggravated assault.

According to police, security guard Dexter Washington was working in the parking lot of Mary Mac’s Tea Room Friday night when he claimed the driver of an SUV attempted to exit through the lot entrance.

Investigators say Washington claimed the SUV bumped him, so he chased it down Myrtle Street and stood in its path as it attempted to drive onto Ponce de Leon Avenue.

The video shows Washington arguing with the driver who never gets out of his SUV.  It seems to show Washington pull his pistol.

The victim later told police that he never bumped Washington and didn’t know who the guard was when he stood in front of the SUV.  The victim explained he feared for his life so he attempted to drive away.

The video obtained by Channel 2′s Richard Elliot shows the victim swerve around Washington without touching him then Washington firing four shots shattering the passenger side window. The victim was not injured, stopped and waited for police.

Byron Davis was eating at a restaurant across the street and witnessed the incident.

“I heard a shot, and I turned around,” said Davis.  “I saw, I thought was a police officer or a security guard shooting at a car that was speeding up to Ponce. I never saw the guard get bumped.  It looked like the car was moving away from him.  He was actually chasing the car.”

Records obtained through the state’s Professional Licensing Board show Washington had the proper license to be guard and to carry an exposed firearm, but they also show he had only been a licensed guard for about two weeks when the shooting happened.

Mary Mac’s Tea Room is an Atlant a institution for more than 70-years.  In a statement, one of its owners Hank Thompson said, “We are extremely concerned about this unfortunate incident and are cooperating with the investigation any way we can.”

Elliot attempted to contact the security company Washington worked for, but calls were not returned.

Washington remains in the Fulton County Jail without bond.

Chess grandmaster hid an iPod touch in the bathroom to cheat during tournaments - Apple Insider

Georgian chess champion Gaioz Nigalidze has been accused of using Apple’s iOS devices to gain a competitive advantage during tournaments, hiding an iPod touch — which was used to analyze the game being played — in the bathroom during at least one such event.

Nigalidze’s match sheet and the iPod touch found in the bathroom

Nigalidze was expelled from the Dubai Open Chess Tournament after organizers discovered an iPod touch, wrapped in toilet paper, stored in a bathroom stall that he visited after each move. Though Nigalidze denied that the device belonged to him, it was logged in to a social networking site under his name and an iOS chess app was found with one of his games on screen.

The search was conducted following an inquiry from Armenian opponent Tigran Petrosian, according to the Telegraph.

“I noticed that he would always visit the same toilet partition, which was strange, since two other partitions weren’t occupied,” Petrosion said. He notified the tournament’s chief arbiter, and officials tossed the stall soon after.

“What they found was the mobile phone with headphones; the device was hidden behind the pan and covered with toilet paper,” Petrosion added.

Electronic cheating has long been a concern for chess tournament organizers, and well-known grandmasters have become increasingly vocal about the need for more stringent regulations regarding the use of electronic devices at tournaments.

British grandmaster Daniel Gormally said last month that there are “a few players in English chess whose ‘improvement’ [he has] found a bit suspicious, to say the least.”

“The problem is that computers are so powerful,” he added. “It’s just a shame because now when you see someone have a significant improvement you think ‘hang on, wait a minute’ and it shouldn’t be that way.”

“Of course, you can’t prove it. If somebody wants to go to the toilet once or twice in a match you wouldn’t be suspicious, but they could easily look at their phone and gain a significant improvement.”

'iPad Pro' Cases Increasing in Quality Ahead of Rumored Fall Launch - Mac Rumors

From design mockups to purported case leaks, the much-rumored “iPad Pro” has been steadily building steam for the past few months. Today, several new cases apparently designed for Apple’s iPad Pro have been leaked, and one in particular is far more detailed than any previously released (via SonnyDickson.com).

ipad pro case
The notable new case leaked today is the first to feature a tri-fold design with a fabric cover, marking a substantial increase in complexity over the simple soft plastic cases seen previously. This increased complexity could be a sign that case manufacturers are increasingly confident in the iPad Pro’s design specs and thus willing to invest in more expensive case designs such as this even months ahead of the expected launch.

Recent rumors point towards the iPad Pro’s screen measuring between 12.2- and 12.9-inches, with the expected array of cutouts for the volume rockers, back-facing camera, lock button, and a charging port. The newly leaked cases have cutouts for all of these features, including what appear to be speakers at both the top and bottom of the device, in line with previous rumors surrounding the tablet.

The new cases also include the mysterious cutout on the left side of the device. Some previous rumored cases have included the cutout, with rumors variously suggesting it could be for a SIM-card tray on cellular models, a second Lightning port, or perhaps a USB-C port. The Wall Street Journal previously claimed Apple is indeed considering including USB on the iPad Pro.

ipad pro
As is always worth pointing out, these early case designs could still be far off from the actual design of whatever the iPad Pro turns out to be, due to case manufacturers creating molds off of leaked or unsubstantiated design elements. But while there have been some notable misses over the years, case designs have generally proven accurate indicators of upcoming product designs.

The latest rumors peg the iPad Pro as perhaps having a triple-core A8X processor, 2 GB of RAM, Touch ID, and possibly shipping with a first-party Apple manufactured stylus accessory. Release date rumors have fluctuated significantly as Apple as reportedly pushed back its internal timeline several times. The latest rumors suggest production could begin in September, perhaps setting up for an October launch alongside a refresh of the existing iPad lineup.

Next-Generation iPhones Could Adopt 7000 Series Aluminum Used in Apple ... - Mac Rumors

Apple’s next-generation iPhones could adopt 7000 Series aluminum used for the Apple Watch Sport, according to Taiwan’s Economic Daily News. The so-called “iPhone 6s” and “iPhone 6s Plus” would likely use Apple’s custom Series 7000 aluminum alloy, which is designed to be 60% stronger than most aluminum, and one-third the density of stainless steel, while still maintaining a light weight.

Aluminum 7000 Apple
Apple elaborated in more detail about the Series 7000 aluminum it used for the Apple Watch Sport on its website, noting that each casing is machined, polished and blasted with microscopic zirconia beads to achieve a consistent satin texture found on each Apple Watch. An additional anodized outer layer helps protect against scratches and corrosion, while the anodizing process also makes possible alternative colors like Space Gray.

For Apple Watch Sport, we started with 7000 Series aluminum — the same used in competition bicycles. We altered it to create a new alloy that's just as light, yet even more durable — it's 60 percent stronger than most aluminum, and one-third the density of stainless steel. It has a bright, lustrous colour and a uniform structure free of defects and impurities. Each case is machined and polished, then blasted with microscopic zirconia beads to achieve a consistent, satin texture. A special anodizing process creates a hard, clear outer layer that helps protect against scratches and corrosion.

Economic Daily News has a mixed track record at reporting on Apple’s upcoming plans, and the translated report does not offer many further details, so this rumor should be treated with a proverbial grain of salt. Nevertheless, it is common for Apple to introduce new features on one device before expanding to others. Force Touch, for example, was exclusive to the Apple Watch before making its way to MacBooks, and the technology is also rumored to be included in the next iPhone.
