The iPod touch is a popular gadget to buy and give as a gift, but users should hold off on buying the iPod touch fifth generation for a few days as Apple could announce a new model at a media event this week.
Apple announced the iPod touch fifth generation at the iPhone and iOS event last year in September, upgrading the display to a 4-inch Retina Display and boosting the camera significantly. The current iPod touch will get an iOS 7 update with new features later this month, but we could also see a new iPod touch 6th generation.
The iPod touch 5th generation earned a Gotta Be Mobile Editor's Choice Award for delivering a premium hardware experience with access to the iTunes App store and a markedly better camera than previous iPod models.

Apple updates the iPod line regularly in the fall, soon after back to school promotions end, usually around the time of a new iPhone. This year we have not heard many rumors about a new iPod touch, but it is still a good idea to wait until after the event to buy a new iPod.
The iPod touch 5th generation is a marked improvement over the earlier model, and we could see Apple deliver further upgrades to the device to take advantage of new iOS 7 features and enhancements to the iPhone which could trickle down.
One sign that Apple may not be ready for a new iPod touch or any new iPod models is the introduction of a cheaper iPod touch 5th generation earlier this year which cut the price by $ 70 and removed the camera.
Still, Apple routinely announces new iPod models in the fall, to deliver a completely new lineup in time for the holiday shopping season and it could still be planning such an update for this year.
The iPod touch 5th generation uses a slower Apple A5 processor which cannot match the iPhone in performance. the iPod touch 5th gen still works with many games on the app store, but a better processor could help Apple deliver a better mobile gaming experience.
Apple is adding support for iPhone and iPad controllers in iOS 7, and with a boosted processor the iPod touch and a new gaming controller could be a formidable gaming machine that could further take a bite out of Sony and Nintendo's mobile business.
Apple could also bump the 5MP camera up to 8MP, essentially borrowing the iPhone 5′s current camera for an improved photo experience. While most of the focus of a dual-LED flash is on the iPhone 5S, the iPod touch is also a potential candidate.
We will soon know if Apple is planning a new iPod touch as Apple holds an iOS 7 and iPhone 5S event on September 10th where we expect to see several new Apple products.
