PHILADELPHIA — A city man already serving a life sentence in prison is presently on trial for the 2008 fatal shooting of a Minnesota transplant who was allegedly killed over an iPod, according to CBS3.
Marcellus Jones, 37, is accused of gunning down Beau Zabel, who was 23 at the time of the June 2008 shooting. Zabel, who had moved to Philadelphia just six weeks earlier, was leaving work when he was shot in the back of the neck.
The only thing reported taken during the encounter was an iPod. Zabel was to start his role as a teaching fellow at Drexel University in October 2008.
The shooting took place near the city’s Bella Vista section and Jones was implicated only after allegedly killing the suspected 19-year-old getaway driver, who was present that night and reportedly bragged about Zabel’s death.
According to reports, Wednesday’s opening testimony included statements from nearby residents who thought the gunshot was actually a blown electrical transformer. No witnesses have positively identified Jones in the shooting and Jones’ defense has argued that there’s no evidence linking him to the shooting.
