CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cleveland State head basketball coach Gary Waters had his first media briefing of the season Tuesday. And while he did not predict this to be a championship season, Waters does not expect a repeat of the 14-18 record from last season.
“This is going to be an interesting year,” he said. “I don’t know if it is going to be great. But it won’t be worse.”
The reasons for optimism are two transfers and the return to health of a key player, giving CSU added experience and depth.
Here’s a look at the three:
• Jon Harris: The 6-8 senior forward from Twinsburg transferred from Miami and is eligible to play immediately as he returned home to be near his ailing father.
“He’s got a lot of skill level,” Waters said.
Look for Harris, who can shoot from the perimeter, to play both forward spots. “We’re really big when he plays the three,” Waters said.
• Anton Grady: The Central Catholic product is returning from a knee injury that caused him to miss nearly all of last season.
“I would say Anton is about 90 percent,” Waters said. “That 10 percent is in his head because he has had so many surgeries.”
• Trey Lewis: The sophomore guard is a product of Garfield Heights and transferred from Penn State.
“We’re trying to change him from a shooter to a point guard, and he still gets his shots off,” Waters said.
There is a strong probability the Vikings will have a three-guard lineup at times, and all of them are prolific shooters; Lewis, Charlie Lee, and returning Horizon League Freshman of the Year Bryn Forbes.
“He’s going to score points,” Waters said of Forbes. “He’s as pure a shooter as I have ever had. Bryn is a natural; a natural-born shooter.”
Seen on TV: The Mid-American Conference announced its television package for the upcoming basketball season. For those who subscribe to Time Warner Cable, you are in luck.
The bulk of the MAC’s a 55-game men’s and women’s package will be produced and distributed by TWC. In addition, there will be 13 games broadcast live on either ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU, plus two games on ESPN’s Internet service, ESPN3.
According to a MAC release, TWC will also work with affiliates in the MAC footprint of Michigan, Illinois, and Indiana. More information concerning the non-TWC affiliate clearances, including Buckeye Cable Sports Network (BCSN/Toledo) and Cox Cable (Greater Cleveland) will be available later.
Well, say hello: This Friday the Akron men’s and women’s basketball teams will be on hand, starting at 6 p.m., in Rhodes Arena to greet fans and sign autographs. This will be held prior to the women’s volleyball game against Western Michigan at 7. Both events are free.
Spooky hoops: Kent State will use Halloween to unveil its 2013-14 edition of its men’s and women’s basketball teams with a free Hoops and Halloween event on Oct. 31 from 6-8 p.m. No trick for the first 200 fans through the door, just a treat in the form of a free Kent State mini basketball.
KSU fans are encouraged to dress up for a costume contest that will be judged by basketball players. Winners will help judge the slam-dunk contest later in the evening. The two-hour event will conclude with two lucky fans shooting a halfcourt shot to win $ 15,000.
