Escambia County Middle School student Tyshai Knight was one of more than 10,000 eighth graders who attended Worlds of Opportunity Career Expo September 25 and 26 in Mobile. Worlds of Opportunity, a career expo which is a project of the Southwest Alabama Workforce Development Council (SAWDC), gives students the opportunity to get hands-on introduction to several areas of industry.
Following their participation in the expo, students were asked to complete an online survey about their experience. Also, when students visited a different "World," they were presented a "passport." From those students, 12 were chosen to receive an iPod presented by SAWDC. Tyshai Knight was one of the 12.
Friday, October 4, Heidi Kearton with SAWDC was in Atmore to surprise Tyshai with her new iPod. Also, on hand was local Alabama Power Company manager Ricky Martin. APCO was one of this year's Worlds of Opportunity sponsors.
The following industries were represented in the expo – Aerospace, Automotive technology, Communications, Construction, Energy, Engineering & Design, Healthcare, Hospitality & Tourism, Manufacturing, Shipbuilding & Repair (Maritime), Public service and Safety. Tyshai said healthcare was her favorite.
Heidi said the 10,000+ students came from public and private schools in eight southwest Alabama counties.
