iOS 7 on iPhone, iPad Mini, Apple TV, iPod Touch – Hidden Features by Apple - Pentagon Post

Apple Inc releases new versions of its flagship operating system called the iOS annually. This year, on the 18th of September, they released the iOS 7 for its iPhone, iPad, iPad mini and touch and the Apple Tv.

iOS 7 provides a complete new experience for the users and is more gesture-oriented than the previous versions. Besides the basic functionalities that almost all iPhone users already know, there are a number of lesser known features that can greatly help enhance the iPhone experience. From simple necessities to quirky tricks, the new iOS brings in several hidden features that a user can stumble upon.

Personalized phone vibration pattern

Although present in the previous version of the iOS, this is a feature that very few people have discovered. Just like you can customize a ringtone for a particular caller, iOS 7 allows the user to create custom vibrations for personal contacts. The "Ringtone" option under the Sound tab has in it a "Vibration setting".  Click on "Custom" and then on "Create new vibration".

Your head movements control your device

The front facing camera of the iPhone can be used by the iOS 7 for detecting head movement. Under Settings, go to General and then the Accessibility tab. Here you will find the Switch control, turn it on. You can then add different "Switches" to use physical cues to control your phone. You could select an app simply by just tilting your head.

Easy Access to the website domain name

The new keyboard of the iOS 7 did not have a .com button. This was met with disappointment from the apple user community who believed that this was a deterrent to their internet surfing.  However, by holding down the "." Button, the .com, .edu, .net and .us selections pop out. This hidden feature in the iOS 7 makes it easier to browse the internet.

Peek in feature

A cool new feature that Apple has introduced in its iOS 7 is the Peak in feature. The peek and flow gestures allows the user to slightly swipe to the right the email or iMessage they are viewing to reveal the list of messages alongside it. This prevents the need to close the current message/email to view the message list.

Siri

With the option of a male and a female gender, users have several new options with Siri. With different types of accents, it is difficult sometimes for Siri to pronounce or even understand certain commands. Just tell Siri, "That's not how you pronounce it", and Siri can then be lead through a test with which you can let Siri know the correct way to pronounce a name or a command.

Siri can also be used to toggle the Wi-Fi and the Bluetooth options of your iDevice.

Undo an email deletion

It is possible that a user accidently deletes an email that may be important. Instead of going back to the trash folder to retrieve it, just shake the iPhone to bring back the message or the email you have just deleted from your inbox.

Block people

Sometimes there are some people in your contact list that you just want to avoid. iOS 7 finally allows a user to block certain people from calling. Just go to the contact in the Contact App and scroll down to the Block this Contact option.

Customize the Parallax wallpaper

iOS 7 allows users to customize their wallpapers from simple pictures to animated backgrounds and even the Parallax wallpapers. This allows the wallpaper to move with the tilt of the phone using the motion sensors. To those who prefer their wallpapers to remain static, they can head to the Accessibility section that lies under the General tab of the Settings menu. The Reduce Motion option will turn off the Parallax wallpaper and movement.

Update an app in the background

Background_Refresh

Why bother with continuously refreshing a frequently used application? Let the iOS 7 enable an automatic background update by clicking on the "Background Update Refresh" option present in the General Settings. It is recommended to use this option on relevant apps only as it tends to take a toll on the battery of the phone.
