Nokia working on 'Guru' iPod Shuffle competitor, are MP3 players still a thing? - VR-Zone

Since it's virtually impossible for Nokia to challenge Apple's iPhones or iPads at the box-office anytime soon, even with impressive-looking devices like the Lumia 1520 or 2520, why not try to go for one of Cupertino's less glamorous but still best-selling gadgets: the iPod line?

Sounds a little far-fetched, I know, but believe it or not the insider that goes by the already legendary pen name EvLeaks claims Nokia has an iPod Shuffle competitor in the works, codenamed "Guru".

Unfortunately, our always trustworthy source of covert information is not yet ready to reveal a great deal about the Guru (cool name, anyways), just that it'll somehow resemble the iconic iPod Shuffle and add NFC in the mix.

Why NFC? Probably to seamlessly pair the gizmo to compatible Lumia smartphones, though it's unclear why you'd want to do that in the first place.

Also unclear is whether there's still a market for portable media players, as phones with pretty awesome sound systems and the ability to play any kind of audio file are all around us. And they're cheap too, so simply pricing the Nokia Guru very low won't do the trick.

Which only leaves it with two possible tricks up its sleeve: portability and great battery life. What do you guys think, if Nokia will play its cards right in those two departments, can the "Guru" give the iPods a run for their money? Or are the Finns beating a dead horse Microsoft Zune-style?

Remember, October 22 is shaping up to be a big day for the Lumia makers, as a high-profile unveiling of the Lumia 1520, 2520, a trio of Ashas, the Lumia 1320 "Batman" and possibly this MP3 player too will be staged in Abu Dhabi. Too bad Apple is holding a press event as well, most likely to formally intro the iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2.
