It's never too early to start the new iPhone rumors, and the latest one focuses on a feature coveted by many fans of the device: a larger screen. The prediction comes from market research firm DisplaySearch in a message posted to its site on Monday.

According to intel gathered by DisplaySearch, Apple may be planning to release a 5.7-inch iPhone in the second quarter of 2014.

Citing research based on Apple's Asia supply chain, analyst David Hsieh wrote:

Introduction of the iPhone 5S and 5C was the latest example that Apple has been slow in adopting the latest display technologies. While 5-6" FHD resolution displays are rapidly growing in the smart phone market, the iPhone has stayed with the 4" 1136×640 screen for over a year and a half. [...] Based on supply chain research, we believe Apple is planning to revamp nearly all of the displays in its products over the next year.

Additionally, the firm refers to the device as the “iPhone 6,” one of the first mentions of the next-generation model we've seen since the launch of the iPhone 5S.

Also mentioned in the report are the long-rumored Apple television, which the firm predicts will be released sometime in the third quarter of 2014, as well as the much discussed iWatch, which the firm slates for release sometime in the fourth quarter of 2014.

So far, Apple has remained steadfast in its commitment to setting trends rather than following them, seemingly avoiding calls to scale its smartphone up to the "phablet" sizes made popularized by Samsung.

But as the iPhone has matured, and as the incremental improvements in the iPhone 5S, have shown, it's becoming ever more challenging to add significant new innovations to the device. It could be that, come 2014, adding a larger screen to the iPhone will be a market necessity rather than a mere design decision.
