The 7-inch Avoca 7 tablet runs on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and has a 800×480 resolution screen. It has a 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, and comes with 8GB of in-built storage, as well as a Micro SD slot which supports a further 32GB.
It also has a 0.3-Megapixel front-facing camera for conducting video calls through services like Skype or for taking pictures, and supports WiFi, audio connections and a built-in eBook reader. The tablet promises up to 8 hours battery life.
Usually priced at £99, the tablet is available for less than half price at £49 during the lead up to Christmas, while stocks last.
"We know that over a third of tablet purchases are for children and family use but that one of the main barriers to not buying a tablet is cost,” said Graham Stapleton, chief executive of Carphone Warehouse UK.
“Our Android 7" tablet smashes right through the previous lowest priced tablets and is perfect for families and anyone wanting a modern, portable tablet at a bargain price. I know a tablet will be top of many Christmas lists this year and this price makes top technology affordable for even more people, so we're expecting this to be hugely popular."
The news comes after high street retailer Argos launched a 7-inch tablet for £99.99 last week, running Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2. Powered by a 1.6GHz dual core processor, MyTablet has a 7-inch, 1024×600 resolution LCD glass screen and features 8GB of memory which, with a Micro SD card, can support up to 32GB.
Both devices will compete against Tesco’s £119 Hudl tablet, which also runs Android Jelly Bean, has a plastic cover and is available in blue, red, black and purple. It includes 16GB of storage, expandable to 48GB, and claims to offer 9.5 hours of battery life.
