'GarageBand' going free for new iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch - Examiner.com

"GarageBand" is joining "iMovie", "iPhoto" and the "iWork" suite in going free for new iOS 7 iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices, according to an Oct 20 report in All App News. Up until now "GarageBand", "iMovie" and "iPhoto" for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch are usually $ 4.99 each. The "iWork" suite of productivity programs–"Pages", "Numbers" and "Keynote"–are normally $ 9.99 each.

To reflect these changes coming to iPhone 5s, Apple has already updated the "Built-in-Apps" section of Apple.com, which also displays their cool new iOS 7 style icons.

Unlike its sister apps however, "GarageBand" may have in-app purchases for instruments and sounds. It’s assumed that the reason for these fees is the cost that Apple must pay for licensing the sounds.

Check out the video to see how you can make your own cool ringtones and songs with "GarageBand" for iOS on iPod Touch, iPad and iPhone.

What’s more, 9to5Mac reports that "iPhoto" will probably get new photo book options and "iMovie" is getting a new feature that lets you watch movies that you create on a Mac or iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. "Keynote" is getting 18 additional themes.

Apple’s move to make its creativity and productivity suites free on new iOS 7 iPhone (as well as iPad and iPod Touch) devices is consistent with the way it bundles these suites for free on Apple’s Macs. Making "GarageBand" and the rest of Apple’s creativity and productivity suites available across all Apple devices both encourages their use by more users (who may not own Macs) and also challenges Microsoft’s contention that only Microsoft’s Surface line of tablets offer productive software.

Apple is expected to announce that "GarageBand" is going freemium, as well as, unveil these new updated apps and their new iOS 7 designed icons, at tomorrow’s event in the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco, at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.

Other announcements at tomorrow’s Apple event will include the unveiling of the new iPad 5, a new iPad mini, and a number of new Apple hardware and software updates.
